There’s something fitting about an old Texas windmill refusing to stand perfectly straight against the sky. Weathered by years of wind, storms, heat, and time, it carries its scars openly while continuing to turn. That spirit is what inspired the title “Against the Grain.”

This image was captured looking upward from beneath the windmill, intentionally emphasizing its aged structure and rugged geometry against the deep Texas blue sky. The angle creates a sense of movement and tension, allowing the blades and framework to stretch outward in different directions while still holding together as one enduring form.

What drew me most to this scene was the personality of the windmill itself. It wasn’t pristine or polished. It leaned, creaked, weathered, and imperfectly survived — which honestly feels more truthful to the spirit of rural Texas than anything brand new ever could. Structures like this become symbols of resilience over time. They remain standing not because conditions were easy, but because they endured difficult ones.

I intentionally processed the image with rich contrast and dramatic tones to emphasize texture, shape, and atmosphere. The darker metal against the vivid sky creates visual tension while preserving the rustic beauty of the windmill’s worn design. The composition almost turns the structure into sculpture rather than machinery.

Photographing windmills across Wise County has always fascinated me because no two feel exactly alike. Each carries its own history, character, and scars from decades spent exposed to the elements. To me, they represent persistence — standing tall even when battered by life.

“Against the Grain” is ultimately about individuality, endurance, and refusing to lose character in a world that often pushes everything toward perfection and uniformity.
