Few buildings in North Texas carry the presence and history of the Wise County Courthouse. Standing proudly in the center of Decatur, Texas, it has watched generations come and go — witnessing celebrations, hardships, community gatherings, and the everyday rhythm of small-town life. For many of us who grew up around Wise County, the courthouse is more than architecture. It’s part of our identity.

This image was captured during the courthouse rededication as dramatic storm clouds rolled across the Texas sky just after sunset. The combination of warm interior lights glowing from the historic structure against the cool blues and grays of the approaching weather created the exact atmosphere I hoped to preserve. It felt cinematic, powerful, and timeless all at once.

I’ve photographed this courthouse many times over the years, but this particular moment carried a deeper emotional weight. The rededication represented preservation — not just of a building, but of community history and shared memory. The courthouse stands as a reminder that while the world around us changes rapidly, some landmarks continue grounding us to where we came from.

The slightly dramatic perspective and soft motion in the clouds help emphasize the grandeur of the architecture while maintaining an emotional, almost storybook quality. I wanted the viewer to feel the courthouse rather than simply observe it.
