The Branding portion of the Texas Vision photography workshop at the Nine Bar ranch in Decatur, Texas. The branding is like a cowboy dance with all cowboys playing their part in this ritual that happens every spring.
The cowboy way isn't always easy to explain to someone who hasn't lived it.
To many, branding can seem harsh at first glance. To ranchers, it is part of the responsibility that comes with caring for livestock and managing large herds across vast landscapes. The brand serves as identification, ownership, and protection—an enduring mark that has connected ranching families for generations.
What drew me to this photograph was not the act itself, but the details surrounding it. The worn jeans, dusty boots, smoke rising from the hide, and the quiet efficiency of experienced hands all tell a deeper story. There is no drama among the cowboys. No hesitation. Just another task that must be done before the day moves on.
The image reveals a side of ranch life rarely seen by the public. It speaks of tradition, stewardship, and a lifestyle built on hard work rather than convenience.
Sometimes the most important stories of the West are found in the moments that aren't polished for public view.
